Chinese EV maker BYD plans to set up a full-scale manufacturing unit in India. The company is looking for partners and is said to be in talks with the Reliance Group and Adani.
Currently, BYD has a small assembly unit in Tamil Nadu. Mr. Rajeev Chauhan, Head of Electric Passenger Vehicles Business at BYD India, stated that the automaker is now keen to start full-scale manufacturing. However, until that is finalized, BYD will continue to offer its global products in India.
At present, BYD India relies on imports. Models like the Atto 3, Seal and eMax 7 are imported as completely built units (CBUs), making it difficult to compete with local players. This is also reflected in BYD’s sales, which were merely over 2,300 units in 2023.
This year, BYD is expecting 40% growth in sales and aims to reach 10,000 units annually within the next 2 years. The company also plans to expand its dealership network from 27 to 47 outlets next year.
