The government has allocated Rs 912.50 crore under the FAME-II scheme and Rs 2,000 crore under the PM E-Drive initiative to strengthen public electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across India, Minister of State for Heavy Industries Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma informed the Lok Sabha.
In a written reply to a parliamentary question, the minister said the setting up of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS) has been classified as an unlicensed activity, allowing private players to establish charging infrastructure without requiring a licence.
According to data shared by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), a total of 29,151 public EV charging stations have been installed nationwide.
Both the FAME-II and PM E-Drive schemes are being implemented on a pan-India basis to accelerate the rollout of charging infrastructure and support the wider adoption of electric mobility.
Out of the Rs 912.50 crore earmarked under the FAME-II scheme for public charging infrastructure, Rs 633.44 crore has already been utilized.
The Ministry of Heavy Industries has also issued operational guidelines under the PM E-Drive scheme, detailing the framework for deploying EV charging stations. The guidelines provide for participation from eligible public and private entities to expand the country’s charging network.
The measures are part of the government’s broader push to accelerate the transition to electric mobility and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
