Govt Pushes ‘Make in India’ Drive with ₹5,532 Crore Boost to Electronics Components Sector

Dear Readers, Friends and Partners, Mobility Magazine

wishes you all an Exciting Year End!

At the national level, in a significant boost to India’s electronics manufacturing ambitions, the government has approved seven projects worth approximately ₹5,532 crore under the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS). According to Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister for Electronics & IT, these projects are expected to help reduce an annual import bill of up to ₹18,000-20,000 crore by bringing key input manufacturing into India. The seven projects span manufacturing of critical components including multi-layer printed circuit boards (PCBs), high-density interconnect (HDI) PCBs, camera module sub-assemblies, copper-clad laminates and polypropylene films.

The state level focus of this issue is on Maharashtra which is fast emerging as a key player in the country’s electronics manufacturing story. For investors and manufacturers, Maharashtra offers a promising manufacturing base – subject to site-specific diligence (availability of land, local supply-chain maturity, utilities, workforce). According to a report, the state accounts for about 18% of India’s electronics output and contributes a significant portion of the country’s electronics exports. With industrial clusters already established in and around Pune, Navi Mumbai, Aurangabad, Nashik and Ahmednagar, the state has excellent manufacturing infrastructure, logistics connectivity and human resources in place.
