After grabbing the first-mover advantage in electric SUV space with Nexon EV, Tata Motors is aggressively eying the entry-level EV segment. Creating a sub-10 lakh electric car was never easy, but Tata has moved there first with Tiago EV. Of course, rivals are not far behind, for example, Citroen eC3 is already here, while MG Comet EV will be launched in a few days. At a starting price of Rs 8.69 lakh, it is clear that Tata is offering an irresistible deal to folks looking for a small car. It is likely to motivate many to choose electric over ICE. Initial response has been overwhelming. Most of the deliveries done till now were of the top spec variants. Now, first batch of Tata Tiago EV base variant has started to arrive at dealer showrooms.
Tiago EV is available in XE (MR), XT (MR), XT (LR), XZ+,LR and XZ+ Tech Lux LR trim levels. Base Tiago EV variant is devoid of features like body coloured door handles, projector headlamps, DRLs, fog lamps, ORVMs with side indicators, push button start, electric tailgate release, cruiser control, rear wiper and wash. It also misses out on power windows, rain sensing wiper, auto headlamp, cooled glovebox, adjustable driver seat, electric adjustable ORVMs, manual key without remote lock / unlock.
A 7.2 kW fast charger option is available with XZ+ and XZ+ Tech Lux. Excluding base-spec XE variant that has a medium range of 250 km, all other variants have a 315 km range. Only XT variant has option of both medium range and long range. Assuming that real-world range is closer to claimed range, both medium range and long-range variants of Tiago EV seem good enough for everyday needs. Inter-city journeys also seem doable.
