Hyundai Mobis has recently announced a significant contract with Volkswagen AG for electric vehicle (EV) components. The agreement primarily focuses on the Battery System Assembly (BSA), a product that combines a battery pack with the battery management system (BMS) and other necessary parts. The purpose of the BSA is to ensure the optimal performance and safety of the EV’s battery.
Interestingly, Volkswagen has opted to utilize Hyundai Mobis’s BSA in its next-generation electric vehicles, instead of producing the components in-house. This decision marks a departure from the conventional rivalry often seen between major companies like Volkswagen and Hyundai. However, considering the recent trend of collaborations and partnerships in the automotive industry, this move may not be entirely surprising
Some industry experts speculate that Volkswagen’s choice to outsource its EV components could indicate a shift in its electric car strategy, possibly driven by the need for new technologies or cost-saving measures. Regardless of the reason, this partnership represents a significant triumph for Hyundai Mobis, as the company continues to expand its BSA manufacturing capabilities worldwide.
As part of this contract, Hyundai Mobis plans to establish a new production base near one of Volkswagen’s plants in Spain to supply the required BSAs. In addition to existing BSA manufacturing facilities in Korea and the Czech Republic, Hyundai Mobis has also recently established electric vehicle hubs in the United States and Indonesia.
The company anticipates receiving more orders for EV parts in the global market, thus solidifying its position as a leading supplier. It is likely that we will see other companies turning to Hyundai Mobis for their electric vehicle component needs in the future.
