Mr. Anku Jain, Managing Director, MediaTek Inc, during an exclusive interaction with Mobility magazine, shares how Mediatek has been able to democratize the face of the Indian mobile ecosystem and their vision and mission. MediaTek is a global fabless semiconductor company that enables nearly 2 billion connected devices a year and is a market leader in developing innovative systems-on-chip (SoC) for mobile device, home entertainment, connectivity and IoT products.
Q. Please share with us about the MediaTek Dimensity 920 and Dimensity 810 Chips for 5G Smartphones.
The MediaTek Dimensity 920 and Dimensity 810 chipsets are the latest additions to our versatile Dimensity 5G family and this long-awaited debut offers smartphone makers the ability to provide boosted performance, brilliant imaging, and smarter displays to their customers. Designed for powerful 5G smartphones, the new MediaTek Dimensity chips balance performance, power and cost to provide an incredible mobile experience. Built using the innovative 6nm high-performance manufacturing node front-lined by TSMC, the chips support intelligent displays and hardware-based 4K HDR video capture. The Dimensity 920 offers a 9% boost in gaming performance compared to its predecessor, the Dimensity 900.
Q. Please brief us about Mediate’s growth over the past 18 months.
From the outset, MediaTek was prepared to face the impact of the pandemic and turn it into an opportunity to enable customers and industries with smart technology and devices, instead of letting it mar business processes. Through sheer determination, and innovative technology solutions, MediaTek has emerged as the preferred chipset partner for smartphone OEMs in India in the first half of 2021 and we aim to maintain this position going ahead. Out of the 117 smartphone models launched in the first half (Jan-Jun) of the year, 54 smartphone models are embedded with MediaTek SoCs, indicating our growth in market share since the pandemic.
Q. Explain the strategic measures undertaken to keep pace with the technology.
MediaTek has always been at the forefront of technology adoption, be it gaming or 5G. In fact, we were the first semiconductor company to create integrated 5G modems in 2019, and we have only gone from strength to strength in the following years. One of our USPs is the fact that we always listen to our customers and strive to offer them the technology they are looking for. The envisioned market space for next-generation technology is driven by requirements to enhance mobile broadband connectivity, reach a massive range of machine type communication, and target services with ultra-reliable and low latency communications and MediaTek is primed to cater to all these frontiers.
Q. How does Make in India bring opportunity for manufacturers? How MediaTek sees this opportunity?
India is a hotbed of talent, especially when it comes to R&D and software capabilities. With the strong support of the ‘Make in India’ initiative, we are creating innovative technologies through collaborations with Indian manufacturers, and working towards developing software capacity in the country, on a sustainable basis. MediaTek, as a key partner to the country’s growth story, is taking its commitment a step further to support domestic innovation and production. We are also helping Indian institutions guide upcoming talent by offering our expertise in the design domain to help set the framework for skill development programmes. The initiative is a huge opportunity for MediaTek and we are keen to be India’s partner in developing the technology segment going forward.
Q. What are MediaTek’s plans for the next couple of years?
MediaTek is committed to making high speed connectivity truly accessible as we help connect the next billions of people and devices. Over the next few years, MediaTek is keen on driving forward Artificial Intelligence (AI) innovations with its cutting-edge system-on-chips (SoCs). Our focus is also on IoT and other emerging technologies which are becoming critical product differentiators across industries. From smart home to smartphones to connected cars and smart ecosystems, MediaTek technology will enable better and smarter consumer experiences in the years ahead.
