During an exclusive interaction with Mobility Magazine, Mr. Ashish Arora, Founder & CEO, BMT shared insights into his entrepreneurial journey, the impact of Make in India, and the promising future of charging technology.
Kindly brief us about yourself.
In 2004, I found myself at a crossroads, a typical juncture for a 12th-grade student grappling with the uncertainty of the future. With aspirations but modest marks, the conventional paths of becoming a doctor, engineer, or scientist seemed out of reach. Hailing from a business-oriented family, I decided to venture into the world of commerce, yet the question lingered—what kind of business?
Amidst the maze of possibilities, a suggestion echoed: delve into the burgeoning realm of mobile accessories. And so, armed with determination but limited knowledge, I embarked on a journey that would shape the next two decades of my life. Ghaffar Market became the initial playground, where we sourced mobile chargers and batteries, peddling them to various retailers. When we were able to sell items for amounts ranging from Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 5,000, it brought immense joy as we began to see some income filling our pockets.
As savings accumulated, a leap was taken, leading to the establishment of a retail shop that not only sold but also offered mobile phone downloading and laminating services. The gradual evolution from retail to distribution unfolded as I secured partnerships to distribute LG mobile phones and other brands.
However, the realization dawned that the city of my origins was becoming confining. The ambition to conquer more significant horizons led my brother and me to the bustling heart of India—Delhi—in 2010. This relocation marked a turning point, but Delhi, with its unforgiving spirit, demanded resilience and hard work. The initial years were characterized by uncertainty and aimless wandering, yet destiny took a favorable turn when a connection in China opened the doors to importing.
The import business thrived, offering valuable insights into the dynamics of global trade. Yet, the realization struck that this was a transient phase, urging me to infuse innovation, technology, and enthusiasm into our pursuits. In 2013, we pivoted towards manufacturing mobile batteries, importing cells and PCBs from China. The machinery was set up in India, and with the sincerity and integrity ingrained in the values of our small Haryana town, we began assembling batteries of impeccable quality.
The emphasis on honesty and quality in a city notorious for skepticism about product guarantees set us apart. Word of mouth, fueled by our commitment, became our greatest ally. Slowly but steadily, the business grew, propelling us to venture into manufacturing 1 Amp chargers in 2014. The journey from a cramped room with 10-15 individuals crafting chargers to a workforce of 700-800 people is a testament to our relentless pursuit of excellence.
Amidst the expansion, a critical realization dawned—design and research were pivotal to controlling and enhancing product quality. The investment in R&D became a cornerstone, with every mistake transforming into a learning opportunity. Over two decades, the metamorphosis from a novice entrepreneur to a manufacturer supplying products to top brands mirrors a journey of perseverance, continuous improvement, and unwavering commitment to delivering excellence. Today, we stand proud, grateful for the trust bestowed upon us by countless households that unknowingly welcome our products into their daily lives.
What are your thoughts about Make in India?
The transformative impact of the Make in India initiative, especially the emphasis on design in India introduced by Prime Minister Modi in 2024, has been instrumental in reshaping our manufacturing landscape. This strategic approach aligns product design with India’s unique requirements, fostering a self-sufficient ecosystem that not only retains financial resources within the country but also fortifies the supply chain.
One significant advantage is the financial perspective. By designing products in India, we ensure that the components and selections are tailored to the feasibility of our nation. This localization minimizes reliance on foreign manufacturers, keeping the monetary flow within India. This approach not only strengthens the domestic economy but also contributes to the resilience and stability of the local manufacturing sector.
Moreover, the shift towards indigenous design has proven to be a game-changer in terms of product quality and supply chain robustness. Previously, our dependency on foreign markets, particularly China, led to unforeseen challenges. Issues with imported parts from China would often disrupt our entire manufacturing line, causing delays and setbacks. However, since transitioning to designs originating in India, our supply chain has become notably more reliable and resilient. The instances of production disruptions have significantly diminished, showcasing the strategic advantage of localized design.
The initiative has not only reduced our dependency on China to a mere 5-10%, primarily for specific components but also diversified our supply chain by sourcing from multiple Indian suppliers. This independence has empowered us to overcome the challenges posed by relying solely on a distant market.
Yet, to fully realize the potential of this transformative shift, it is crucial that Modi’s new design policy reaches the grassroots level, particularly small manufacturers. The synergy between India’s skilled engineers, who are amongst the best globally, and the manufacturing sector must be strengthened. Modi’s vision of a self-reliant India can only be actualized when small manufacturers embrace the ethos of designing and manufacturing products domestically.
As we witness a paradigm shift in global preferences, with foreign customers actively seeking Indian products over Chinese alternatives, it becomes evident that Make in India has positioned our nation as a formidable player in the global market. This success owes much to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision and leadership, inspiring and catalyzing the transformative initiatives that have propelled us towards self-sufficiency and global prominence.
What new opportunities do you see in the future?
With the strides made in designing and manufacturing in India, new vistas of opportunity have opened up, particularly in the realm of fast-charging technology. In today’s fast-paced life, where mobile phones are indispensable, customers crave quick charging solutions. Leveraging the Make in India and Design in India initiatives, we are rapidly advancing in the development of fast-charging technologies, ensuring that the entire process, from quality control to design, is indigenous.
Looking ahead, we are on the cusp of introducing a 100-watt charger, catering to the growing demand for ultra-fast charging. The evolving landscape also foresees the obsolescence of wires, as customers increasingly seek hassle-free solutions. Wireless charging technology is at the forefront of this revolution, with devices like wireless chargers and power banks already in circulation. However, the future promises an even more seamless experience, akin to a Wi-Fi modem in your room, where your phone charges automatically without physical contact. Collaborating with a US company, we are actively engaged in developing this cutting-edge wireless charging technology, aspiring to introduce it in India soon. In this era of innovation, the opportunity to pioneer advancements before global competitors positions India for success in the evolving landscape of charging technology.
What message would you like to give?
To the entire business community, I extend a heartfelt appeal to contribute to the growth of manufacturing and foster a robust ecosystem. Brands, both big and small, should collaborate to uplift emerging manufacturers. For those entering the industry, I emphasize ethical business practices—create products you’d proudly use at home, considering device compatibility, environmental impact, and avoiding reliance on products made in China. Dedication, determination, and ethical commitment are paramount. Let’s openly communicate, share information, and collectively propel our nation forward. Gratitude to Mobility, suppliers, buyers, experts, brands, and customers whose unwavering support has been integral to this journey. Thank you sincerely for being part of this collective endeavor.
