Xiaomi, in partnership with NGO SAAHAS, launched a 3-year program to combat ocean-bound plastics and enhance waste management across 12 Gram Panchayats in Kundapura and Baindoor taluks, Udupi district. The initiative focuses on sustainable waste practices and marine conservation, including efficient waste collection, community-led cleanups, river protection via trash barriers, fishing community engagement, and enhanced Solid Waste Management facilities.
The surge in population, urban development, and tourism has spurred the buildup of plastic waste, posing a critical threat to coastal ecosystems and the environment. Through this campaign, Xiaomi India strives to curb ocean-bound plastics and advocate effective waste management practices. The initiative aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals to fight against plastic pollution and climate change. It will be executed by an on-ground team consisting of Project Coordinators, Field Supervisors, and Gram Panchayat personnel. This initiative aims to induce behavioral change, enhance capacity, build robust infrastructure, and establish a sustainable system for waste collection and processing.
Mr. Muralikrishnan B, President at Xiaomi India said, “Xiaomi India is invested in contributing towards the well-being and betterment of the society through meaningful initiatives and partnerships. Recognizing the vital role of the coastal ecosystem in our broader environment, our collaboration with SAAHAS aims to address the pressing issue of plastic waste management effectively. The program will promote awareness, and encourage actions that safeguard marine ecosystems, ensuring a more sustainable and harmonious coexistence for present and future generations.”
Commenting on the program, Mr. Mahesh Kumar, Director Programs at SAAHAS said, “We are excited to join forces with Xiaomi India in addressing the pressing environmental challenges faced by Udupi district. Through our collaboration, we will actively contribute to implementing sustainable waste practices, community-led cleanups, and the protection of vital river ecosystems. Together, we aspire to make a significant impact on ocean-bound plastics and contribute to the global fight against plastic pollution and climate change.”
The program aims to divert approximately 2300 kgs of dry waste daily from landfills and water sources, consequently mitigating carbon emissions and their impact on climate change. It will further enhance community awareness around blue flag beaches, fostering efforts to safeguard these shores from plastic pollution and sustain the marine ecosystem.
Xiaomi remains steadfast in its commitment to creating a positive impact on both society and the environment. It will continue to innovate and collaborate with relevant stakeholders for the well-being of the communities they serve.
